Huling taon na!

I will not be able to continue posting pictures about our Caramoan trip as I've already posted it in my Facebook page. Hehe. Nakakatamad na ulitin.

Anyways, my last (hopefully really my last) school year in law school is about to begin. June 15 welcome fourth year!!! Finally!!! I vow to study, study, and study more. The preparation for the Bar exams starts on the first day of our first year in law school. But the fourth year will be our last whole chance to study everything in a longer period. Bar review is just six months so the fourth year is already a long time.

Good luck and God bless to all seniors! :)

Bicol Express: Caramoan adventures

Before the summer ends, JC and Gracey travelled some 600 kilometers down to the Bicol region for our "huling hirit sa tag-init."

View of Mt. Mayon

The pictures would have to speak for themselves about the beauty that mother nature has.

Caramoan was our destination -- words are not enough to describe the beauty of the islands we visited during our island hopping tour. Matukad island is the best among them, with its fine white sand and the famous lagoon above the rocks/mountain within the island. We braved the sharp and pointed rocks and climbed all the way up to see the lagoon.

JC and Gracey climbing all the way up

View when you reach the top of the rocky mountain

JC, then the lagoon on the background

The second island we visited is Lahus Island, also known as Bitchara Island named after Filipino dancer Maribeth Bitchara. According to our tour guide, the dancer's family rented the island some time before and built some structures there for their accommodation. Unfortunately, some corals in the water were destroyed that time.

Lahus Island (it has two shores, parang tagus-tagusan, thus the name Lahus)

I stand by my vote

The elections is over. The people have spoken. But I am proud to say that I am not one of those millions who elected the yellow man as next president of this republic. I am proud to have chosen and voted for the best among the candidates. Even if my bet, the HONORABLE GILBERTO TEODORO did not win, he is still the best candidate who would have started the drive towards the road to change, reconciliation and further development in the Philippines.

Last Monday, I cast my vote, looked at the very popular PCOS machine, and prayed that my one vote for Gibo would be helpful in bringing in a new breed of change in this country. But like the millions who voted for Gibo, my vote was defeated by the bigger number of voters who cannot move on from the Marcos-Aquino rivalry and the over use of "Mom and Dad". My vote was also defeated by those who voted for Erap even if his track record and criminal conviction proved him to be unworthy of the seat of the presidency.

What I learned from this election is how to select the best candidate and stand up for him until the end. I also learned that the Filipino people is hard to teach when it comes to choosing the most capable leader of this land. The elections also affirmed the mediocrity of the electorate. I may be saying all things negative but those are really the thoughts and the feelings I have now.

Move on -- that's what we all have to do now. Support the incoming president? Maybe in time.

5 days to go

With just five short days left before the 2010 national elections in my beloved country - the Philippines, candidates are indorsed here and there by various religious and socio-political groups. The Iglesia ni Kristo indorsed the yellow men Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas. The CBCP indorsed JC delos Reyes. The Kingdom of Jesus Christ the Name above every name indorsed Gilbert Teodoro.

With all these, the elections is just getting more and more exciting. Nonetheless, I continue to support my candidate, Gilbert Teodoro!!!

To doubt or not to doubt

I haven't written for a long time, in this blog, since there's so many things coming up that made me busy I can't even watch marathons of the TV series I've downloaded. The episodes have piled up and I just need a couple of days to watch so I can catch up.

Anyway, last week I bought the last piece (maybe just for that day, there are more hard bound version left) of the paper back version of the book Shadow of Doubt, Probing the Supreme Court by Maritess Danguilan Vitug. (Paper back costs P475, the hard bound cost P750). I heard about the book as it was kind of controversial when it was launched. A classmate finished reading it and he influenced me a bit into reading it too.

I have the highest respects for the members of the Court and I wanted to know what the book contained that made some Justices unhappy for its release. Interestingly, the writer is not a lawyer. She is a journalist. So I expected that there would be some tough remarks against the Justices, judges, and members of the legal profession who are or who have been in close relations with the present administration. Indeed there are too many hits on these honorable members of the Court and their colleagues in and out of their chambers.
I have covered almost half of the book. I can't finish it right away because I read it only during my free time. Surprisingly, Ms. Vitug discussed something that I knew from some source and which I wrote about sometime last year in another domain. Anyway, the writing in Ms. Vitug's book only affirms that such "happening" is true, that I was right, and that the one who used my own writing against me found it offensive that I knew about it. Come on, "connections" is not limited to that earthling.

The Philippine judicial system has its own highs and lows - from the selection of the members of the Supreme Court and inferior courts, to the performance of Justices and judges and even lawyers in the prosecution service. Society is unforgiving for members of the legal profession and it is not hard to criticize this profession for some who understand it less.

One part of the book was about the Justices appointed by the incumbent appointing authority that were found to be erroneous by her critics. For example, the appointment and the eventual recall of the appointment of Mr. Justice Gregory Ong. Citizenship issues arose when he was appointed that lead to his not being an official member of the Supreme Court. Ms. Vitug stressed that Justice Ong failed his Criminal Procedure class in San Beda College of Law when he was still a law student. She kind of questioned the positions of Ong as prosecutor, Judge and Justice of the Sandiganbayan because of such failed mark in Crimpro. (I passed Crim Pro in San Beda with flying colors.) It was as if she was making the point that such failure in Criminal Procedure meant that Ong was not fit to handle criminal cases. For a law student, failure in a subject does not mean that the student can no longer be an expert in that field. When we fail, we study harder to learn the lesson. Add to that, failing in SBC law does not necessarily mean the student is dumb or that he does not understand the subject. (I do not have to discuss the system in SBC) This is one point I did not actually like in the book.

As to the revelations (revelations since they were new to me) about the character of some of the Justices, I was shocked upon reading those. It appears that these people really do know how to appear innocent. Well that makes them wise men - wise enough to conceal what they think could destroy them.

What to do

Summah!!! But I haven't been to any summer destination yet. Except Baguio. Went there for the Holy Week and for my sister's college graduation. There's so many things to do here at work.

Speaking of work, I'm quite in a dilemma on whether or not to submit my resume to a fraternity brother's law firm since my sis/blockmate (now Attorney) Dang told me to submit my resume and I would be hired right away since there is a need of personnel in the law firm. I can't submit it yet this time because I still have a pending project here in the office.

I'll think about the offer, observe the goings-on (or going ons ???) here. Travel to Makati is not easy since I still have one year in school. Oh well, I'll just need to see some signs first. :)

the end of the 5th

The end of the 5th year has come. Yes indeed, I will officially enter my 5th year in law school come June. And by that time I'll be officially a 4th year student!!!!! Anyways, before going into that I want to enjoy my vacation - as if I have and as if I have nothing else to do this summer.

Summer break has started, at least for me and the rest of my schoolmates. My friends from other schools are yet to take their final exams next week, whereas I'm done with mine last Friday. It is indeed an early summer break for me.

This summer I would have to fix my time to make sure all my commitments are accomplished on time and very well done. First is the Political Law memory aid for 2010. I am currently the subject chair of the Political Law committee in my school so I kind of have a big task since Poli Law is one of the hardest subjects in the bar exams. At least I had a good Poli background in San Beda. Anyways, since I'll be in the 4th year in June, it would be very helpful for me to focus on making it.

For now, this is all I can post. Hehehe. Will have a very busy summer break ahead.

American Idol 9

A week before finals and here I am, blogging a bit about the current season of American Idol.

As I watched the auditions and the first shows last week I didn't find anybody worthy to be the next winner of the competition. Well that may be a very early judgment but unlike other previous seasons there was no one stood out among the top 24. There was no one whom I thought would be able to pull it off all the way to the top 12 or so. That's just me and my opinion - from the point of view of an ordinary fan with no musical training at all. Hehehe.

Random Rantings

Finals is in two weeks. I do not feel panicky about it because I know how to stretch the little time I have for review. But what concerns me is that there are many more other small and trivial things that crop up each day which cause too much irritation and annoyance and even the loss of my concentration and focus.

There are just some people who get into my nerves sometimes. These people are those who seem to forget their place in this world and forget that society was never created equal.

My point is simple to make. DO not be so comfortable with another to the extent that the line that borders you becomes invisible.

Grr. I can't even make myself clear. All I want is to express everything with utter vagueness. Anyway these earthlings I feel some sort of irritation do not seem to understand even simple things as in simple things!

Grrrrr. Rant. Rant. Rant.

Tune in to the music

I have not apprised myself of the latest tunes these days. I always ask, "who sang that?" or "what's the title of this/that song?"

Because of that, and thanks to Kuya Johnny who has finally fixed the cable TV, I've finally tuned in non-stop to Myx, Channel V and MTV. Thanks to these music stations I've heard fresh new songs.

With that, I dloaded some new (or methinks are new) tracks:

1. Brick by boring brick - Paramore
2. Bad Boy Romance - Lady Gaga
3. Empire State of Mind - Alicia Key's solo version
4. Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart - Alicia Keys
5. Tik tok - Kesha

No Korean song hahaha..

Sulong Gibo, Lipad Tayo!

Sulong Gibo!

Well, it's obvious, I'm rooting for Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro for President in the May 2010 automated polls.

To me, Gibo is the most promising among the presidentiables - the more known presidentiables at that. I'm sorry to discount Nick Perlas and Bro. Eddie Villanueva in the race. Mr. Teodoro may be a cabinet member of the Arroyo administration, but observing his recent decisions and opinions, he knows how to stand on his own and declare his own principles to be more important than anything else.

Some see Gibo's bid as a losing battle because he is allied with Lakas-Kampi. Nonetheless, during the presidential fora and debates concluded recently and some months ago, Gibo was a top favorite among the learned audience - students and professionals. We cannot expect Erap to be admired by students anyway. Whereas, Villar has treated the electorate as if we were ignorant through his numerous campaign ads on TV.

Well, for now, I can only wish that many more voters use their minds and measure the candidates according to their capacity and not on what is around them. We are smart voters and so we should choose this person who does not talk trash about his opponents. The one who does not believe in negative publicity to win support of the people.

Sulong Gibo!

Quiapo Sunday

I got up late yesterday for the 11am Sunday Mass which I usually attend at the Abbey of the Our Lady of Montserrat (San Beda College, Manila) so JC and I just went to Quiapo church ‘coz I thought there was an hourly mass every Sunday. But when we got there the noon mass just ended and the next mass would be hours after.

image

The above shot was taken when no one saw us taking pictures yet.

image

Since I frequently go to Quiapo, we took some pictures in the Church. At first we were able to capture a couple of photos. Then when we were about to leave, JC took two more but the old lady who was a volunteer told us that it was prohibited to take pictures inside the Church.

Sorry po Senior Sto. NiƱo.

Farewell to our dear boss

RIP Sec. Cerge. We will miss the kind and humble boss that we had for nearly one year.

These are the photos during the turn over ceremony on February 1, 2009 and his first press briefing as Press Secretary on the same day.

These are the photos I have recovered from my Multiply account. I cannot find the group picture I have with the PS and my officemates.

During the unsecured situation me and my officemates were in last year, the PS graciously visited us at our unit and asked how we were. Aaron was still in the office at that time while I have already left so I didn't see his warm show of concern. Well he will be remembered as the always-smiling official you see on NBN 6 during media briefings every Friday or when there is something official to announce.

He was JC's big boss too when they were still both at the PMS.

Now that the PS is gone, I wouldn't be waiting for any article from his daily online column.

Rest in peace, boss.

Supreme Court

Pics from our SC visit.

The Supreme Court

This where the 15 Justices sit en banc

The exhibit box (I think)

Where the public sit as they watch the oral arguments

The curtains, but not the ones which cost millions, I remember those were burned

This is where the nominees for Justice position present themselves

This is where a new lawyer takes his oath when he wasn't able to attend at the PICC, in other words LATE

CJ who?

The hottest issue these days is the issue on whether or not the President can appoint a Chief Justice since CJ Puno is to retire ten days after the May 10, 2010 national elections. People with legal know-how know how to deal with this issue, whereas those uneducated in this field would just make ignorant comments to the point that the comments sound stupid already.

Anyways, there are conflicting provisions of the Constitution on the matter. There is that one found on Article VII, Section 15,

Section 15. Two months immediately before the next presidential elections and up to the end of his term, a President or Acting President shall not make appointments, except temporary appointments to executive positions when continued vacancies therein will prejudice public service or endanger public safety.

There is one found on Article VIII, Section 4, to wit:

Section 4. (1) The Supreme Court shall be composed of a Chief Justice and fourteen Associate Justices. It may sit en banc or in its discretion, in division of three, five, or seven Members. Any vacancy shall be filled within ninety days from the occurrence thereof.

As to which of these provisions shall prevail, only the SC can make a pronouncement.

But on my own point of view, the President can make such appointment. She can because the prohibition on the first quoted provision does not include the judiciary. She can appoint the 15th justice to complete the 15-man Supreme Court. But as to the appointment of the CHIEF JUSTICE I think she can leave it up to the next president.

Contrary to the views of some others, mostly the critics, there is no vacuum in case Puno retires because among the 14 Justices left there will be one acting Chief Justice who does not need appointment. It's just like normal office routine that the most senior in appointment would have to come up temporarily.

Anyways, there isn't any actual case or controversy yet so these are all advance hits of the political opposition to politicize the Supreme Court.

A week after the hell week

Well hell week was over last Saturday. I have one final midterms exam on Saturday though - that would be Taxation Law Review. I don't know how in the world would I study it. Tax is not so friendly in law school, we can all attest to that.

Anyways, today we went to the Supreme Court as part of one of our class requirements. I'd be posting the pictures I took some other day as I don't have my card reader at the moment.

After exams week then it's back to normal. Same old thing, recit, recit and recit.

Hell(o) Week!!!

It's hell week once again, midterms it is. I am not feeling the feeling of even a little preparedness as the news that the midterms starts today was announced only last week. Had it been said in December last year I would have used the break for some advance review. Nonetheless, I have no choice but to study.

Other than the hell week, this is also the start of not having a good friend/colleague here in the office. She has ventured into a new endeavor and is awaiting for the results of a possible scholarship abroad. We will surely miss the company of Kat here at the office.

Store personnel's inefficiency

I would be burdened much if I pay the whole amount of what was supposed to be paid in installments. This is my quandary now because of the negligence of the department store's cashier in inputting the amount of my purchase and the terms of its payment.

Well I have no choice but to go to the Megamall to have it fixed otherwise I would pay what I didn't agree to.

The cashier during that time was poking fun with the bagger that's why they were not able to input it correctly. Grrr!!!

Well I hope this gets fixed before tomorrow.

Good morning! :)

I woke up early today, as in 6am, to read my unread lessons. After an hour I slept back and woke up 8.15 only to find out I'm gonna be late for work. Geez...

I don't think it's a good idea to wake up early then doze off a bit.

Happy 2010! :)
